M-Start 11: Shaping the Future of Mining Through Open Innovation

#m-start ciclo 11 #mstart

The mining sector is constantly evolving, and innovation plays a crucial role in driving this transformation. Since its inception, the Mining Hub has been at the forefront of innovation in the industry, connecting mining companies and startups to tackle real-world challenges with disruptive solutions. With the launch of the 11th cycle of the M-Start program, we are taking another significant step forward in this journey.

What is M-Start?

M-Start is an open innovation program, a pioneer in the mining sector, that brings together mining companies and startups to solve real challenges through proofs of concept (PoCs). Organized by the Mining Hub, the world’s first mining innovation hub, the program fosters the creation of innovative solutions to meet industry demands, enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and safety.

In its 11th edition, M-Start is accepting applications until January 20, 2025. Startups from Brazil and around the world are invited to submit their ideas to transform mining processes and operations.

Why is M-Start so important?

Mining is a vital industry for the global economy, but it faces complex challenges that demand modern and sustainable solutions. Through M-Start, the Mining Hub enables:

Collaboration between startups and major mining companies: Startups have the opportunity to work directly with leading mining companies, including Vale, Nexa, Samarco, CBMM, Gerdau, J.Mendes, Morro do Ipê, and MRN.

Real-world validation of solutions: Selected proposals are tested in controlled environments through PoCs, allowing startups to validate their technologies in actual mining operations.

Promotion of sustainability and innovation: The program drives the development of solutions that generate positive impacts for the environment, workers, and society.

Building a collaborative ecosystem: Open innovation fosters knowledge exchange across sectors, accelerating the digital and sustainable transformation of the mining industry.

The Challenges of the 11th Cycle

In this edition, eight mining companies have presented 17 challenges across five strategic themes that reflect the sector's key demands and trends:

Energy Transition: Solutions to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy sources, contributing to the decarbonization of mining.

Operational Efficiency: Technologies to optimize processes, boost productivity, and reduce operational costs.

Occupational Health and Safety: Initiatives to improve working conditions, ensuring the safety and well-being of employees.

Waste and Tailings Management: Solutions for the sustainable reuse, reduction, or handling of waste generated by mining operations.

Water Management: Technologies that promote efficient and sustainable water usage, minimizing environmental impacts and optimizing resources.

These themes underscore the industry's commitment to adopting more responsible and efficient practices, aligned with the expectations of an increasingly sustainable world.

Why Should Your Startup Participate?

If your startup has an innovative solution that could transform mining, M-Start is the perfect opportunity to bring it to life. Beyond collaborating directly with industry leaders, participating in the program offers benefits such as:

Exposure and networking: Connect with an innovation ecosystem that includes mining companies, investors, and strategic partners.

Product or service validation: Test your solution in the real-world operations of mining companies.

Technical support and resources: Receive assistance to develop your PoC and demonstrate the value of your solution.
